From the look of the rest of her, what with the fire hose still connected to the water pump, the reason it's still that way is prolly 'cause the darned spark arrestor screen's been blown clean apart. In all fairness, wood and coal smoke are acrid, as you know. And stuff subjected to 'em tends to rust, or rot. 'Specially when they got wet.
